Christianity has become overcomplicated. As Tolstoy observed in “The Kingdom of God is Within You,” the message of Jesus wasn’t meant to be complex, but institutions and religious systems have made it so. The truth is, understanding what Jesus stood for doesn’t require theological degrees or complicated doctrines. It comes down to three essential principles that can transform how we live.

The Parable That Changes Everything

Jesus told a powerful parable (Matthew 21:33-46, Mark 12:1-12, and Luke 20:9-19) about a vineyard owner who sent messengers to his workers, only to have them killed. Finally, he sent his son, thinking, “Surely they’ll respect my son.” But they killed him too, believing they could claim the vineyard for themselves.

This story reveals something profound: throughout history, God has sent messengers to humanity, and we’ve consistently rejected them. Jesus wasn’t sent as a sacrifice to appease an angry God. He was sent to personally embody what God has been trying to communicate all along—that God will tolerate whatever it takes to maintain relationship with creation.

The Three Core Principles Jesus Taught

1. Love God Above All Systems

When we truly love and honor God, He becomes our source for everything: safety, security, provision, identity, and worth. This matters more than we realize in our modern world.

Think about how advertising works. Marketers don’t sell cars—they sell the illusion of success. They don’t sell vacations—they sell the image of a perfect life. We’re constantly being sold identities to purchase rather than embody.

When God becomes our identity system instead of material possessions or social status, we stop falling into traps that hurt ourselves and others. We stop chasing illusions and start living in truth.

2. Love Others as You Love Yourself

This principle creates a powerful accountability check. If you wouldn’t want something to happen to you, don’t let it happen to others. If you desire grace and mercy, extend grace and mercy. If you want kindness, be kind.

It’s beautifully simple: treat people the way you want to be treated, and treat them the way you want God to treat you.

3. Serve Others Before Yourself

Jesus modeled a radical “superhero mentality”—always looking for ways to save, serve, and support others, even at personal expense. He chose humility over exposure, servanthood over status, and consistently put others first.

Grace Over Law

Jesus frequently confronted the Pharisees because they valued preserving rules more than loving the people those rules were meant to protect. They got offended quickly without considering intentions or extending grace.

Sound familiar? We live in a culture of outrage where we’re quick to be offended without asking if offense was truly intended. Not everything requires a militant response. We only need to be militant about our own words and actions and how they impact others.

If we all focused on monitoring ourselves rather than policing everyone else, many of our current social and political problems would dissolve.

The Simple Truth

What did Jesus stand for? Love God. Love others. Serve others.

That’s it. Not complicated. Not overwhelming. Just three principles that, when genuinely practiced, transform everything. You can’t go wrong when you build your life on this foundation.

Christianity doesn’t have to be complicated. Jesus never intended it to be.
