Dark storm clouds over green fields with winding river and distant hills

What if the pressure to defend God has been the very thing keeping you from knowing Him?

I do not have it all figured out. And honestly? I never will.

That realization did not come easily. As someone on a deconstruction to reconstruction journey with faith, one of the hardest things I have had to accept is that there simply is not enough time to learn everything. Learning is an endless ladder. You could spend your entire life searching for answers and end up with more questions than when you started.

And for a while, I thought that was a problem.

When Research Becomes a Way to Avoid the Leap

I am the kind of person who does a full 360 degree check on every layer of something before I even think about turning the plane on and flying it. I agonize over decisions. I research every angle, terrified of making the wrong choice or committing to something I cannot undo. I cover every base so that no one in the stands has a reason to criticize.

What an exhausting way to live.

Eventually I realized that searching, questioning, and researching can quietly become a distraction from choosing and acting. Overthinking is not the same as wisdom. At some point you have to move.

Now I set time limits on how long I will linger in uncertainty. There will always be people who know more than I do. I am okay with that. I would rather keep learning with humility than pretend I have already arrived.

Why My Faith Does Not Need a Debate to Survive

Here is where I might lose some people, and I am fine with that.

I do not care how airtight the argument is for why God does or does not exist. I have already seen enough in my own life to know that something is real. My faith does not rest on a Bible verse, a pastor’s sermon, an apologist’s dissertation, or a theological framework. It rests on personal experience.

There is a force that communicates with people. It operates outside the limitations of time. It has been prophetic, encouraging, loving, and accurate. I have not just witnessed this in my own life. I have watched it happen to other people too. And I think that is actually the point.

Faith that is only built on arguments will collapse the moment a better argument comes along. Faith that is built on personal testimony is a different thing entirely.

Evangelizing Is Not About Making Converts

I think we have gotten evangelism wrong for a long time.

It was never supposed to be about pressuring people into a belief system or making converts through debate and guilt. I believe evangelizing is simply about making people aware that God’s presence is available to them, and then inviting them to test that claim for themselves. God is not fragile. He does not need us to close the deal.

Which brings me to the thing I most needed to hear.

God Does Not Need an Attorney

For so much of my life I felt the weight of needing to be prepared to defend God. To have the right answers. To win the argument. To represent the case well enough that people would believe.

But God does not need an attorney. He is fully capable of defending Himself.

How arrogant of me to think I was powerful enough to save God for God.

That one sentence changed something in me. The pressure I had been carrying around, the pressure to have all the answers, to be theologically bulletproof, to never get caught not knowing something, it was never mine to carry. I picked it up on my own and called it faithfulness.

Real faith is not about being right. It is about being honest. It is about showing up with what you actually know, sharing what you have genuinely experienced, and trusting that God can handle the rest of the conversation.

The Takeaway

If you are in a season of deconstruction, or if you have spent years feeling like your faith was only as strong as your last argument, I want you to hear this.

You do not have to defend God. You do not have to have every answer. You do not have to be a theologian, an apologist, or an expert to have a real and valid faith.

You just have to be honest about what you have seen, what you have experienced, and what you are still figuring out.

That is enough. And so are you.
